Programme Lead - Towards Predator-Free Taranaki

We are looking for a Programme Lead- Towards Predator-Free Taranaki to join our Operations team at the Taranaki Regional Council. This position is permanent and full time.

Mō mātou | About us

We are an enthusiastic bunch of people at Taranaki Regional Council, helping the region continue to be an enviable place to live, play and do business.

Our main office is based right in the centre of the region, under the Maunga (mountain), in Whakaahurangi (Stratford).

We have 3 beautiful gardens; Pukeiti, Tūpare and Hollard Gardens. Many of our staff work on a daily basis around the region and we are a 35 minute commute from New Plymouth. This region allows you to have all the big city benefits whilst maintaining a rural lifestyle given the relatively quick ability to travel between our towns and the city.

Whakatakanga & Whanonga pono|  Mission & Values

Our mission is to work for a thriving Taranaki by promoting the sustainable use, development and protection of our natural and physical resources, and advocating for the region’s best interests.

We are committed to providing a service first approach to the public and regional community, and in doing so aim to continue to better the quality of our performance while working safely, sustaining effective communication and teamwork, having the initiative and right to make mistakes, holding accountability for improvement, being results-driven, and holding high job satisfaction.

Mō te tūnga | About the role

Leading a team of dedicated and passionate environmentalists in one of the most cutting-edge and challenging predator-free projects in New Zealand.  Launched in 2018, Towards Predator-Free Taranaki works across urban, rural and conservation land to remove predators and restore the region’s native biodiversity. This includes New Zealand’s first landscape scale ‘zero possum’ eradication project, in and surrounding the rugged Kaitake Range.  Check out our website for the great stuff we've done so far and what we aim to achieve in the future.

As you can see, Predator Free 2050 is a big goal! So it goes without saying that we need a Programme Lead who brings energy, enthusiasm and excellent project management skills to head up the delivery of Towards Predator-Free Taranaki.

There is no typical day in this role - expect to have variety and challenge, along with the autonomy to do things your way.  You'll be based in our office in Stratford so you can connect and collaborate with your colleagues.  However, you'll spend loads of time out in the Taranaki region connecting with the many different community stakeholders - whether that's in the bush, on our maunga, farmland or in urban centres.

Mōu | About you

We like to set people up for success so you'll be a leading applicant if you have:

  • Studied hard and/or worked in biosecurity/biodiversity (even better if you have exposure to predator-control projects)
  • Excellent communication skills with emotional and cultural intelligence
  • Energy and enthusiasm to motivate and influence great teams
  • Delivered projects in the past and can share your learnings with others
  • Confidence to collaborate and nurture great relationships with key stakeholders like iwi, hapū, media and community groups
  • Exposure to the facilitation and negotiation of contracts
  • Enthusiasm for technology developments in predator control

What’s on offer?

Taranaki Regional Council is a fantastic place to work! We have a great Environment Services team with many staff perks including:

  • Active social club
  • Flexible working options
  • Induction programmes for every new employee
  • Free car parking
  • Training opportunities within each role

However, the best part is working alongside fantastic people who are truly dedicated to the Taranaki region.
